Свежее интервью Моры Тирни.
November/December 2005 issue of Women's Health

Mad About Maura
The actress talks about turning 40, saving her husband’s life, and getting in shape for a role on a diet of wine and pasta. There’s a reason we like her so much.

Maura Tierney knows all about odd jobs. “I sold muffler parts over the phone when I was a teenager,” she says. “I also once had a job at Windsurfing Manhattan. I thought it was a front- I mean, who’s windsurfing on the Hudson River?” Fortunately, a combination of hard work, unwavering drive, and, yes, humor, propelled the Boston native beyond the realm of surf wax sales. You know her best as ER’s stoic Dr. Abby Lockhart and Newsradio’s funny but insecure Lisa Miller; next year she stars alongside Paul Rudd in the independent comedy Diggers, a coming-of-age story about clam diggers set in Long Island, New York, in 1976. But even with almost 20 years of onscreen experience, she still admits to feeling moments of vulnerability and self-doubt as an actress. (“Just yesterday. I’m not kidding you.”)

The refreshingly normal way the 40-year-old spends her downtime only adds to her likeability. Most often she hangs out at the Los Angeles and New York City homes she shares with her husband of 11 years, film writer/director Billy Morrissette, and their pug, Rose Kennedy, named after the long-lived Kennedy matriarch in hopes that the dog would have a similar lifespan. As for prolonging her own dog years, Tierney follows her husband’s healthy eating habits (“I’m shamed into eating well”) and runs whenever she can (“I’m happy because I just got up to 5 miles”). And as champ of Bravo’s 2004 Celebrity Poker Showdown, she won $100,000 for the Children’s Aid Society Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program in New York City, a charitable after-school program she supports. “I got lucky,” she says. “I got great cards.”

It quickly becomes clear that Tierney possesses that rare and appealing alchemy of vulnerability and wry wit. Ask her how she feels about being a thinking man’s sex symbol and her reaction goes from surprise to embarrassment, until finally she laughs out loud. “I’m just trying to get past the thinking man’s part,” she quips. Wait until they hear about your auto-body background, Tierney.

For the last 5 years on ER, you’ve played a woman who is utterly unflappable. Are you equally cool?

No, I’m extremely flappable. That’s something I like about the character. She’s seen it all. I worry about everything, which is silly, because there’s very little you can control anyway. My husband’s great, because he really doesn’t worry. And he also says, “If you’re worried, do A,B, or C.” And I’m like, “Oh, okay, you can do something about it.”

Have you picked up any medical skills on the set?

I diagnosed my husband with appendicitis. He had pain in his lower right stomach, was nauseous, and had a fever, so I looked up his symptoms in my medical textbook and said, “You have to go to the doctor.” He thought I was crazy. I’m not really the nurturer type. I had to go to work, so I called a friend and said, “Can you take Billy to the hospital?” He went- under protest- and was rushed into surgery. I can’t say he thanks me every second, even though I saved his life. But in all fairness to him, I wanted him to be better in a few days after having this horrible surgery. I was like, “What are you still doing on the couch?” I don’t have much patience with sick people.

With your grueling ER schedule, what made you decide to take a film project during your hiatus?

I thought I wasn’t going to work this summer, and then they called with Diggers. It was a really great, well-written, smart, cute script. I’d been nervous about not working, and then when I got the job, I was nervous about the job. My husband and I took 3 weeks to go to Italy first, and because the film takes place in 1976 when people had different body types- try on those vintage clothes and size 10 is tiny!- I actually had to exercise on vacation, which I’ve never done before. I’d go running every day, which was a new discipline for me. I didn’t lose weight, but I didn’t turn into a big fat pig in Italy, and I was able to have pasta and wine for lunch.

You say you’re not ambitious. How is that possible?

I don’t think ambition is what drives me. I don’t want a clothing line or anything. I tend to focus on what I’m doing at the moment, and that takes up the entire span of my focus. So I don’t think, “If I do this, that will happen.” It’s more of a project-by-project [basis].

You and your husband met more than a decade ago in LA. Is there a secret to staying together?

I don’t know, and I always thing it’s interesting when people are able to identify exactly what works in their relationship and elaborate on it. I don’t think I’m able to do that. I think it changes. It’s not like the reason we stay married is “A,” or the thing that works is “B.” My husband is very, very funny, which I think has a lot to do with it.

What do you guys like to do during your downtime?

I’ve been in LA for 12 years, but we didn’t buy a house until 2 years ago, because we were pretending we didn’t live there or something. Our house has a nice backyard and a pool, and I really like hanging out at home. When we’re on the East Coast, we spend time with our families- my family is in Boston and Billy’s is in Connecticut. We were just in Nantucket, where we rented a house so we could all be together. Most of my friends from college are still in New York. That’s why we didn’t travel for so many years. We’d make plans to go away for the summer, and then we’d get here and say, “Let’s just stay.”

Do you ever look around and think, “I can’t believe this is my life?”It’s funny to have been married for 10 years. It’s funny to look around and say, “Wow, this is the house we live in, and we’re married.” That I’m a grown-up is a little weird to me. But I think feeling like a fraud is about shyness. You learn tricks, how to negotiate social situations to make it better- you learn to ask questions, which is sort of nice, because you become a good listener. People love to talk about themselves, and I’m a curious person. But then there are moments when you walk into a party and your armor fails you, and that’s excruciating, because you really can’t talk. That still happens to me occasionally, and that’s really painful.

There are a lot of web sites devoted to your sex appeal. Is that something you’ve fostered?

No, I don’t think about being sexy. It’s not usually the roles I play. I did a lot of sitcoms, and being funny isn’t about being beautiful. Usually beautiful people aren’t funny people. And then ER really isn’t about that. On ER, we’re supposed to look like real people- tired and stressed-out. The producers will say to the makeup department, “Less makeup on everybody.” I’ve been fortunate that the jobs I’ve had don’t depend on what I look like.

What do you think is sexy in a woman?

Giant fake tits [laughing]. I think sexiness is different for every woman. In a man, I like funny guys. A guy who doesn’t have a lot of therapy, who’s mature. A man, not a boy.

You turned 40 this year- a big milestone for most women and certainly for an actress. How do you feel about it?

I’m more comfortable in every way, except maybe this little space in my brain that says, “You should feel worried about being 40.” I don’t fear it, and I feel more at ease- I’m very happy in my marriage; I have a great job; it’s all good. But it does kind of suck to get old. You start to notice stuff, like when you wake up and you have a wrinkle in your face from the sheets, and it’ll last an hour and a half because you don’t have as much elasticity in your cheeks anymore. That’s sort of a drag. But I do feel good. I just think there is a part of your brain that is supposed to be afraid of getting old, even if you’re not really.

Свежее интервью Джона Легуизамо (доктор Клименте\Сид)

TV Guide (December 5-11)

John Leguizamo

He's breathing new life into the venerable ER, and even holding his own against a chimp. But could he take on Goran?

Your character, Dr. Clemente, has been starting trouble. What's his deal?

Clemente's a medical sharpshooter, like [coach] Larry Brown is to the Knicks. He's got that New York City Latin man complex. Even as a little kid, he was always the king.

Last month he treated a chimp. What was that like?

It wasn't easy, but it was fun. This little monkey was 6 months old. I had to go in early to meet him - to snuggle with him, feed him and make breathing sounds. Basically I had to be friends with the chimp so he wouldn't be scared when I went to touch him. He was so damn cute. I was instantly in love with the little sucker.

So that old saying about never working with kids or animals.......
is not true. Although he did upstage us all the time. That chimp got more close-ups than I did.

You've talked about how hazardous it was to work on the gruesome zombie flick "Land of the Dead"." What are the dangers of ER?

The doctor-ese is tough, man. It's like gibberish in your brain. I'm writing it on sheets, on Post-Its, on surgical gloves. So when it looks like I'm checking someone's head, I can look at my glove.

Dr. Clemente and Dr. Kovac have had some big fights. How do you prepare for the intense back-and-forth?

I stay by myself a lot, build tension, demonize Goran Visnjic in a way. But it's fun to throw down with him. We had to do a lot of takes [in my early episodes] because we were both too riled up. Things got too heated. The director had to go, "Come on, guys. Save something for the other episodes!" But we drank beers afterward. Goran is like that. I'm like that.

What will you butt heads over next?

We're doctors, not thugs. So the writers are going to switch it up. It's going to change into a much more clever, manipulative thing.

Well, in a street fight, how do you think you'd do against a big guy like Goran?

I've fought a guy like that. He's got a long reach, no doubt. But I'm pretty scrappy. I have a crazy-hard right that can knock people out. I've had my nose broken four times. So I know what I'm doing in a fight. You have to hit them really hard, really fast in the nose bone. Or the jaw.
Goran, he might win but he's going to be hurt.

What's been the hardest part about being on ER?

Oh, my God, doing that little girl episode [about a young kidnapping victim who was shot] was tough. I've got kids [Allegra Sky, 6, and Lucas Ryder, 5], and the prosthetics they put on top of the little girl actress looked so real I didn't have to act. I was really upset.

This month Dr. Clemente's ex comes back. What's up with her?

She's serious trouble. She's not a stalker. And he really does like her and she really does like him. But her husband, he's crazy. It was an extramarital fling and it's just dangerous.

Over the years, you've done all the big talk shows. Who gives the best dressing-room gifts?

Leno give you a bit more. You get the cup, the robe, the hat. Then they give you Altoids, vodka, Lasik certificates - crazy stuff.

Who's you favorite?

That's hard. The Daily Show. I just go there as a fan.

You share a birthday with Willem Dafoe, David Spade and Danny Glover. Who would you throw a party with?

Willem Dafoe. He's a crazy, out-there, dirty dude. I love him. He's like, anti-Hollywood. I love that. I met him a couple times. He has a country home where I have a country home.

As a former hood rat from Queens, did you ever thing you'd say that sentence?

Never! After sharing a bedroom with my brother for years, I never thought I'd say I have a country home.

Rochell D. Thomas

свежее интервь. Лесли Бибб (Эрин Харкинс в 9 сезоне)

Leslie Bibb: TV Guide hates me, I know it.

TVGuide.com: Oh, hate is such a strong word. So, look at you, someone nicknamed Lulu playing someone named Lu!
Bibb: I know, can you believe it? Hey, I've got to switch phones because I'm about to run out of batteries. [Looking around] Where in the ham sandwich is my phone? There it is.... Can you hear me?

TVGuide.com: Did you just say "Where in the ham sandwich"?
Bibb: Yep. I'm trying not to swear.

TVGuide.com: Where did that expression come from?
Bibb: You've never heard that? Everybody says that. I'm a Virginia girl, so maybe it's a Southern thing — but don't quote me on that. I'm trying to stop swearing because I usually sound like a trucker.

TVGuide.com: You, like, totally chopped off your hair for Jordan!
Bibb: [Laughs] Everyone's talking about that! You know what, I change it all the time. Now I think I'm going to grow it long. I had extensions for a movie I just did.

TVGuide.com: This isn't your "serious shrink" hair?
Bibb: No, this is "I was bored and felt like cutting it, and then I got the job."

TVGuide.com: Will the Woody-Lu love-hate thing soon be consummated?
Bibb: Here's what happens: Because Crossing Jordan is run by the most amazing people in the world, they let me go off to do this movie, so I did about three episodes, and then I came back for [Episode] 14 on. It was unbelievably kind that they let me do this.

TVGuide.com: But still more love-hate ahead?
Bibb: Still love-hate. We're starting to get into the thick of things; the plot is starting to thicken. There's a big thing that happens between Woody and Jordan, and just when everybody thinks it's going to go one way, they throw in a twist.

TVGuide.com: You were on ER back when I watched that show religiously. Refresh my memory on who you played.
Bibb: I was an intern named Erin Harkins. I had a "thing" with Luka, and he almost killed me.

TVGuide.com: Oh yeah, they were in that car crash and the episode went "backwards" explaining what led up to it.
Bibb: It was pretty cool, I loved that episode! That was a fun show. Again, it was another show that I never watched, and then I got that job and I said to my sister, "I have all these scenes with a guy named Carter," and she was like, "Oh my god! That's Noah Wyle!" When I got the job, I was like, "Whatever, it's a job," and now I look back and think it was so cool to be a part of television history.

TVGuide.com: Is it true Erin was supposed to die in that crash, and they changed their minds to keep you on?
Bibb: No. No. Didn't die. I had to go do a pilot called Line of Fire, so I got out to do that and all of a sudden I did my rounds "upstairs."

TVGuide.com: Would Goran Visnjic have gotten your vote to be the new James Bond?
Bibb: That would have been a nice James Bond. He's a stud. He's got that Clive Owen thing going on.

TVGuide.com: Do you keep in touch with anyone from Popular?
Bibb: Carly Pope and I are really good friends.

TVGuide.com: You girls meet for Starbucks every day?
Bibb: Well, seeing that she lives in Canada, that'd be a little difficult! [Laughs] But we stay in touch. I just got an e-mail from her saying that she's in town, so I'll probably be getting together with her — probably not at Starbucks, but maybe at Aroma?

TVGuide.com: She actually went in for the role of Brooke, which you wound up getting, right?
Bibb: This is true. We both were auditioning for Brooke, and as soon as we left, they ran out and gave her the sides for Sam — which is always terrible for the other girls, the others reading for Sam. They're like, "S---!"

TVGuide.com: Hey, you just swore!
Bibb: I did. It's over. I have to be honest, I woke up swearing this morning.

TVGuide.com: Popular's Christopher Gorham is doing Out of Practice now....
Bibb: What's Out of Practice?

TVGuide.com: [Sighs heavily]
Bibb: I know. I know. Should we end now? Is the interview over?

TVGuide.com: I mean, you have this recurring Jordan gig, the income is there to buy a TV....
Bibb: Actually, my friend, I'm part of the cast now.

TVGuide.com: Even more so! You can get a CRT set pretty cheaply....
Bibb: My friend, here's what you need to know about Leslie Bibb: I just got a cell phone in the last year, and my first laptop in the last six months. I am the most techno-unsavvy person on the face

TVGuide.com: Is it true WB misled the producers about Popular's cancellation, letting them set up cliff-hangers that were never resolved?
Bibb: News to me. That show, as much as I loved it, I think it was good that it ended when it did. Ryan Murphy went on to do Nip/Tuck, so it was better for him.... And personally, I think when you get something so fast, you don't appreciate it and all you've got is attitude and you've got no g-r- with the attitude — you've got no gratitude. I'm glad it didn't go any further because it allowed me to step back and go, "Oh, man, it's nice to actually have a job!"

TVGuide.com: Right, you don't want your first gig to go nine years and then — wham! — you're like, "How do I audition again?"
Bibb: Even if it ran for four years, you become a person you don't want to be, and I found myself becoming a person I didn't want to be — I wasn't grateful for anything, I was just chock-full of attitude. Now when I walk onto a set, I'm like, "Wow, I'm so lucky!" It sounds corny, but it's true. Hey buddy, guess what? I just found out that this little independent film got into Sundance?

TVGuide.com: Wristcutters: A Love Story?
Bibb: Yes!

TVGuide.com: Is the title meant to be ironic or funny?
Bibb: It's supposed to be funny, but we're in the dramatic competition. It's about a guy who kills himself, and I'm sort of his object of infatuation. He sort of glamorizes this relationship [we had when we were both alive] that wasn't that good.

TVGuide.com: Tell me about "Untitled Will Ferrell NASCAR Comedy."
Bibb: That's my movie!

TVGuide.com: Were you a Ferrell fan going in? Or, "I've never watched SNL, either."
Bibb: Please. And I'm an even bigger fan coming out. "More cowbell." I really feel like I was the luckiest girl in Hollywood this year because I got the best job. He is the nicest, kindest, most sincere, talented, funny, generous actor you could ever work with.

TVGuide.com: Is he all "serious" about being funny, or just funny?
Bibb: He's just funny. And he has no qualms about making something funnier for you, even at his expense.

TVGuide.com: What's the bullet on your character?
Bibb: I play Will Ferrell's crazy wife, Carly, and she's just... I feel like Carly is a star of her own country love song. She knows what she wants, and she's very savvy about getting it. Maybe she's not the nicest girl in the world, but she's really funny. She's a delicious villain. I say stuff where you're like, "She did not just say that."

TVGuide.com: Did you get to drive the cars?
Bibb: I didn't, but I did take my rental on one of the speedways at night and it scared the s--- out of me, I was screaming the entire time — and I was going like 40 mph. But man, I'm telling you, it was the time of my life. I feel really lucky right now — Crossing Jordan has this wonderful set where everyone is so nice and we have a good time, and the writers let me play this really fun, kick-ass character. This [next] episode I get to break down some doors.... And I also get to be naked. Oops! I just let something slip out of the bag! Oh, I'm just kidding.
